L'aggettivo complex significa “complicato, complesso” e si usa per descrivere qualcosa che è composto da molte parti o elementi: a complex piece of machinery, un pezzo di macchinario complesso; a complex system, un sistema complesso. Complicated significa “complicato” nel senso di “non immediato, difficile da capire”: a complicated task, un compito difficile; a complicated question, una domanda complicata. Tuttavia, ciò che è complesso (strutturalmente intricato) tende per sua natura a essere complicato (non immediato) e quindi i due termini spesso coincidono nell'uso.
